The Ninth Wave is perhaps the most impressive and well-known painting by the Russian-Armenian marine painter Ivan Aivazovsky(1817-1900); it was painted in 1850 and is now in the Russian Museum, St. Petersburg. Described as "an ode to human daring in the face of the elements" it is sometimes called "the most beautiful painting in Russia". (From Wikipedia).
