Stress Management

Unhealthy stress arrives uninvited.

There are different types of stress. We may experience survival stress, environmental stress, internal stress or stress from fatigue and overwork. The key is understanding and learning how to manage unhealthy stress and thereby reducing the ill effects it has on your mind and body.

Most of the time, we aren’t experiencing a life or death situation. However, our automatic response system doesn’t understand that. When we feel threatened, consciously or subconsciously, we respond as our ancestors did back in the day of gathering berries and hunting for the evening meal. We are programmed to either fight — stand our ground — or to retreat — take flight and run away as fast as we can. What was once a life saving response can now be an obstacle to healthier, happier living if we do not learn to understand and manage our primitive responses.

We recognize stress through physical, emotional and behavioral signs. You may experience an accelerated heartbeat, a nervous stomach, tightening of muscles, shallow or rapid breathing or butterflies in your stomach. You may suffer from headaches, insomnia, fatigue, chest tension or intestinal discomfort. Sometimes the signs of unhealthy stress are expressed in our emotional states. You may find yourself “on edge”, “snippy” with others, feeling guilty, worried, sad, fearful, angry or just plain bored. The symptoms of stress are so varied and common in today’s changing world that it is difficult to not feel any of these symptoms.
